Rene Lacote: Paris, circa 1820 'Double top' model, extremely rare
An extremely rare guitar by Rene Lacote, paris, circa 1820. Labelled with correct oval label internally, but inked last digit of the date has faded, but the 182- is clear. Table of fine grained pine, rosette and edging of decorative engraved mother of pearl inset into black mastic, table flush with fingerboard, internal secondary table of fine grained pine, floating on two blocks, ribs of figured satinwood, back to match, with oval soundhole cut in, ebony veneered neck and heel, usual V join, with headstock core of beech, veneered in ebony on both sides, no Lacote brand or stamp visible, with side mounted tuners, ebony fingerboard set flush with table, and later T-shaped frets.
Condition:
Table: in good condition, with hard French polish finish, probably original, and one small repaired crack just behind bridge, 4 cms long, adjacent to centre seam. No other damage. Table is not distorted or sunken, bridge is original and in place, and all pins present. Action is perfect.
Internal table: Uncracked, bears paper Lacote label, the internal table visible also through rear oval soundhole, which is edged in plain ebony, this secondary table appears top float on two blocks at top and bottom of the guitar. A very rare and unusual feature from this highly innovative maker.
Ribs: Figured Satinwood, bass rib has rectangular patch in upper bout, and one long repaired crack in lower bout, the whole rib re-polished and intact- these repairs are very old, and have held up well. Treble side rib has only one small shrinkage crack where an internal bar has pushed against the rib, well repaired and intact now- This rib too has been re-polished.
Back: This is one piece of decorative figured satinwood, laid onto a base of fine grained pine. No cracks, no repairs, and has probably been re-polished to match the ribs. Edged with single ebony purfling.
Neck: Ebony veneer, no cracks, no repairs, heel the same, heel block cap has been re-glued, action good, no problems at all.
Head: No repairs, the tuners are original, but one has a repaired rivet bearer plate and slightly bent shaft, with a poor copy replaced button. This could be repaired to a higher standard ( will quote if needed) better, and made to match the others, but all work well. Frets are T section, (replacements).
All in all, a very rare desirable guitar, from the best maker, and fully playable, sold with new set of correct strings fitted . This guitar is offered on behalf the executors of a deceased estate, and any sale is subject to approval of the executors.
